In 1996, after a lifelong fascination with the Garden of Eden story, Max felt compelled to write about the rhythmic dance of opposites in man’s fall from a primordial paradise—by the simple ingestion of a “knowing” fruit. What could it all mean? Something about a knowledge of good and evil; of opposing pairs; of dueling pairs of opposites. Of Duality! Not just knowledge of one duality, but of all dualities: peace and conflict, bliss and suffering, male and female, god and man—the multitudinous coupling of dancing dualities. The material literally flowed from him. The experience was rather mystical, and after four years of continuous writing, the compulsion stopped as quickly as it began. He promptly stuffed the manuscript in a manila envelope and filed it away in the back of his closet, only to rediscover it in the winter of 2007. Guardian Of the Den, A Study on the Nature of Duality and its Inherent Wisdom is the product of that discovery and his first published book.
Not only a duality theorist, Max is also an internationally recognized teacher and choreographer of Contemporary Dance. He holds a Master’s Degree in Choreographic Theory and Practice and has served as Senior Lecturer on the dance faculty at Southern Methodist University. He has performed on Broadway, taught at the Juilliard Conservatory and conducted choreography seminars for Cirque du Soleil. He was Artistic Director of The New York Dance Exchange, an international intensive workshop series, and continues to teach throughout Europe and Japan. Living in New York City, Max is currently a faculty member at STEPS Studio and Dance New Amsterdam, (DNA).
